NE Public Transport Firm Nexus Are First To Go Live With MPP's Mobile
Ticketing System
MPP Global has been contracted to develop a mobile
ticketing system for public transport by Ticket Mobility, an initiative
partly funded by the European Commission and spearheaded in the UK by NEXUS
(Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive based in Newcastle).
Kevin Park, CEO of Ticket Mobility, said: "Mobile Phones are becoming ever
more useful and versatile tools and Ticket Mobility will offer a new
and valuable service for public transport."
The mTicket system offers a major step forward and is designed to reduce
the costs involved with issuing and verifying traditional tickets. It gives
users instant access to real-time, location-specific information and ticketing
facilities. Users simply text a keyword in order to buy a ticket and by
recognising the mobile phone number the system will automatically purchase
the ticket and send an mTicket by SMS.
Ken Brown from Nexus said: "The mobile ticketing system will improve service
and the delivery of information for everyday public transport users. The
costs we are going to save with the new mTicketing system will be significant
and will enable us to further invest in infrastructure. I can't wait for
the system to go live."
Payment is made using credit and debit cards, which are stored using MPP
eWallet technology. If users are buying a ticket for the first time, a WAP
page is automatically loaded onto their mobile phone and, like a mini-web
page, enables users to securely add credit card information in order to
activate their eWallet. The mTicket, delivered by SMS, cannot be forwarded
by users and is easily verified by ticket inspectors on trains, trams and
buses. Timetable, route and fare information is delivered to their email
account for future use using MPP's txt2mail technology.
Paul Johnson MD MPP says: "MPP was the first UK company to carry out real-time
mCommerce transactions at the beginning of 2000. It has taken a while for
general mCommerce adoption to increase outside of ring tones and logos.
Now that it has, we are naturally delighted to be at the forefront of this
technology and providing our products to Ticket Mobility and Nexus".
