QR Codes - Mobile Barcodes
QR Codes, initially used for tracking parts in manufacturing, are now used in a much broader context spanning both commercial tracking applications as well as convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users.
MPP provide QR Codes functionality as part of its mobile response platform txt2. A QR code can store addresses, URLs and messages. QR codes can appear in magazines, bill board advertising, buses, business cards or just about any object where an advertiser might want to solicit a response from a user or a user might need information about what is being advertised.
Using a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software, users can scan the image of the QR Code. Scanning the image will launch the phone internet browser and automatically redirect to the URL imbedded in the QR Code, send a text message or display a message on the screen to the user.
QR codes can also be sent to a user’s phone and displayed on-screen. This can be used by a retailer as a discount voucher with the retailer scanning the user phone screen at the point of purchase. Alternatively they can be used as mobile loyalty cards by scanning the QR code upon entry to a venue and collecting points every time the user visits.
The possibilities for this can be split into two areas; the QR code being scanned by the consumer, or a QR code being sent as an image to the user’s phone:
QR Code scanned by the consumer:
- Used to link the phone to a wap site
- For purchasing content straight off the page
- To receive a voucher
- To receive free content
- Used to send an SMS message from the consumer to a third party
- Used to display information on the mobile phone screen
QR Code sent to the consumer:
- The code can be redeemed in-store for discounts
- Redeemed in conjunction with related promotions/brand
- Cinema (e.g. Orange)
- Gig tickets
- Other event entry (e.g. Nightclub)
