The Importance Of Social Media To eCommerce

We at MPP Global help our clients create beautifully presented sites with streaming media presentations, secure check-out systems and more. Yet some of them still lose customers to rival e commerce sites, because they forget one important thing – the value of social media marketing.

Facebook is the one place that every online retailer worth his or her salt must have a link. It’s the ideal way to keep existing customers and make new ones. Well over half of all online shoppers use social media sites to interact with other people – and 80% of those visits are to Facebook. However, when you look at the figures for e commerce sites, they’re somewhat different. At least half of all current online retailers either don’t use Facebook, or they use it inefficiently.

Although Facebook is thought of as a young person’s site, many of those using it are in their 30s and 40s, and are women with families – a huge marketing group to target. Primarily, they use the site to find out about offers and products, making it the ideal place for video streaming presentations and links. Customers love to hear about promotions and new products; posting them on Facebook brings them to the attention of a whole new audience.

Is Facebook the only option? No. A Nielsen survey on internet shoppers showed that 80% made regular Facebook visits, compared to 31% for YouTube and 22% for MySpace. However, this still means a lot of visitors to those sites, and they’re the ideal place for posting streaming media links to your products and services.
